Which AI coding tool should you actually use in 2026?
Seven serious tools, three developer profiles, no affiliate links. This is what we would tell a friend picking today, based on real use — not marketing pages.

Codex CLI (OpenAI)
Fast, cheap per token, tight integration with GPT-family. Weaker at long-context reasoning. Good second agent.
Cursor
Best AI-native IDE. Great for people who live in an editor. Cursor Composer is powerful but locks you in the IDE.
Windsurf (Codeium)
Cursor competitor with Cascade agent. Slightly more autonomous. Fast catch-up in 2025–2026.
Aider
Open-source CLI classic. Works with any model including local. No frills, high control. Free.
Gemini CLI
Massive context window. Great for exploration on large monorepos. Weaker at precise edits than Claude Code.
Cline (VS Code extension)
The best tasked-focused agent inside VS Code. Fine cost tracking. Good for controlled autonomy.

The missing layer
Whichever you pick, you will hit the same wall.
Every tool listed here has the same problem: no cross-session, cross-agent memory. Switch tools, lose context. Reopen tomorrow, half your reasoning is gone. Frequently asked questions
What about GitHub Copilot?
Copilot is excellent for inline completion in your IDE. It is not an agent in the same sense as Claude Code or Cursor Composer, so we did not include it in the head-to-head. Great complement.
What about Devin?
